TJ began its Learning through Inquiry, Fellowship, and Tutoring (LIFT) program in 2015, an outreach initiative intended to give lower-income middle schoolers in Fairfax County greater access to STEM education and learning opportunities. It provides talented young scholars an opportunity to participate in challenging STEM courses, engage with TJ mentors, and enroll in test-prep sessions to prepare for the TJ admissions exam. Such opportunities might not be available for many of these students without the support of LIFT. While LIFT serves as a step towards increasing diversity at TJ- a priority for many parents, teachers, students, and alumni- it also instills confidence and inspires those with a budding interest in STEM to pursue advanced academic courses and STEM learning.
This year, there are sixty seventh-graders and sixty eighth-graders, including forty who participated last year, enrolled in the LIFT program. This grant funds test-prep books for these 120 students ($60/ book).
